Students to see science is easy

The Jakarta Post, Jakarta

Hundreds of Indonesian scientists have been enlisted to help change the belief among elementary school students that science is either boring or difficult.

"Actually science is easy to understand and interesting. The problem perhaps lies in the incorrect teaching methods or incompetent teachers," a member of the National Commission of UNESCO, Arief Rahman, was quoted as saying by Antara news agency over the weekend.

Arief was speaking at the launch of Science for All program on Friday in which up to 1,000 scientists will meet the capital's elementary school students at the Science and Technology Exhibition Center in Taman Mini Indonesia Indah from Tuesday to Thursday.

The Science for All program is jointly organized by UNESCO, the Education Ministry, the State Ministry for Research and Technology, the Jakarta administration and the Surya Institute.

An official from the State Ministry for Research and Technology dealing with the promotion and marketing of science and technology, Dewi Odjar, said that the exhibition center was a vocational facility that promoted science through audiovisual aids.

Despite the lack of interest of most elementary school students, Indonesia has carved a name in many science competitions both on the regional and world levels.

Recently, Indonesia grabbed two gold medals, three silver, two bronze and an honorable mention at the Asian Physics Olympiad held in Shanghai, China, on April 21-29.

A separate group of Indonesian students also won their first silver medal at the 14th International Conference of Young Scientists held in St. Petersburg, Russia, between April 21 and 27.

In 2006, Indonesia grabbed four gold medals at the International Physics Olympiad in Singapore, securing a champion title.

Jonathan Pradana Mailoa also grabbed the absolute winner title in 2006 after chalking the highest score out of 384 participants from 85 countries.
